New York City's Empire Bins Initiative: Transforming Trash Collection for a Cleaner City

New York City is set to introduce large trash bins to replace the traditional garbage bags that clutter the sidewalks. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the rollout of the Spanish-made Empire Bins in the Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Queens by the end of 2027. This initiative, which started in Manhattan under former Mayor Eric Adams, has proven effective in reducing rat sightings in West Harlem. The bins will be mandatory for residential buildings with 30 or more units, with over 6,500 bins planned for deployment in the expansion.

The Empire Bins can only be accessed by building staff or sanitation workers, ensuring secure containment of trash. Specially designed garbage trucks will lift the bins into their compactors, eliminating the need for manual handling of trash bags. The expansion will bring the bins to various neighborhoods across the city, including Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Schools in Brooklyn have already received the bins, with plans to introduce them to additional neighborhoods in the near future.

Residents in specific neighborhoods, such as the West Village, SoHo, Little Italy, and Greenwich Village in Manhattan, will see the Empire Bins installed over the next 18 months. In the Bronx, neighborhoods like Hunts Point, Longwood, and University Heights will benefit from the bins. Queens will receive the bins in areas like Sunnyside and Woodside, while Staten Island neighborhoods like St. George and West Brighton will also have the bins installed. Residential buildings with 10 to 30 units can choose to opt in to receive the Empire Bins.

Mayor Mamdani aims to fully containerize the city's waste by 2032, emphasizing the importance of clean and healthy streets for all New Yorkers. The introduction of the Empire Bins is a significant step towards achieving this goal and improving the overall cleanliness and sanitation of the city.
