U.S. Expands Naval Blockade of Iran: Targeting Dark Fleet Worldwide

The United States has expanded its naval blockade of Iran, allowing the search and seizure of vessels associated with Tehran's dark fleet worldwide. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command has authorized the enforcement of the blockade, with Iranian vessels, OFAC-sanctioned vessels, and those suspected of carrying contraband subject to visit, board, search, and seizure.

The directive broadens the enforcement scope to include ships beyond the immediate region if they have ties to Iran or are sanctioned by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control. Contraband items include weapons systems, ammunition, explosives, military technology, petroleum products, and nuclear-related materials.

General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed the change during a briefing with War Secretary Pete Hegseth, stating that U.S. forces will actively pursue Iranian-flagged vessels and those providing material support to Iran, including dark fleet vessels carrying Iranian oil.

Iran's dark fleet comprises aging oil tankers that operate outside standard maritime regulations to evade sanctions. These vessels use manipulated tracking data, falsified documentation, and opaque brokering networks to conceal the origin and destination of Iranian oil shipments.

The expanded enforcement follows U.S. Central Command's announcement of a blockade to intercept vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports to disrupt Iran's seaborne trade. Adm. Brad Cooper highlighted the economic impact, noting that 90% of Iran's economy relies on international trade by sea.

The blockade will be applied globally and impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports across the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. U.S. forces will not interfere with ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to non-Iranian destinations, as the action targets Iran's ports and coastline, not the strait.

As a temporary ceasefire nears expiration, the question remains whether President Donald Trump will extend military operations against Iran. The blockade aims to disrupt Iran's seaborne trade and prevent the illicit activities of the dark fleet vessels.
