U.S. Treasury Imposes Sanctions on Northeast Cartel-Linked Entities and Individuals

The U.S. Treasury Department recently imposed sanctions on three individuals and two casinos for their alleged connections to the Northeast Cartel in Mexico. The Northeast Cartel, a designated terrorist organization, is known for its involvement in illegal activities such as drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, and human trafficking. The group operates primarily in Nuevo Laredo, a key border city between the U.S. and Mexico.

Among the entities targeted by the sanctions is Casino Centenario in Nuevo Laredo, which is accused of serving as a drug storage facility and money laundering operation through its gambling activities. Another sanctioned casino is Diamante Casino in Tampico, which runs an online betting platform. The sanctions also extend to individuals like Eduardo Javier Islas Valdez and attorney Juan Pablo Penilla Rodríguez, who are alleged to have supported the cartel's criminal activities.

Activist Jesús Reymundo Ramos was also included in the list of sanctioned individuals for his role in spreading cartel propaganda under the guise of human rights advocacy. The sanctions imposed by the U.S. government freeze the assets of the targeted individuals and prohibit any business dealings with them in the United States.

Ramos, who denied allegations linking him to the Northeast Cartel, claimed that his phone was compromised by spyware in 2020. Penilla Rodríguez, on the other hand, is said to have assisted a leader of Los Zetas, a predecessor of the Northeast Cartel, who was extradited to the U.S. along with other key figures of the organization.

In a separate incident, two individuals and Mexican rapper Ricardo Hernández Medrano, also known as El Makabelico or Comando Exclusivo, were sanctioned in August for their alleged ties to the criminal organization. The U.S. government's actions reflect its ongoing efforts to combat organized crime in Mexico and disrupt the operations of cartels in the region.
