Preserving History: £10 Million Grant Secured for Royal Festival Hall Repairs

The Southbank Centre has been granted £10 million for essential repairs to the Royal Festival Hall in preparation for its 75th anniversary celebrations. The iconic venue has hosted legendary performers over the years and is in need of critical maintenance. The funding comes from the Arts Everywhere Fund, part of the Creative Foundations Fund supported by Arts Council England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The grant will be used to address overdue maintenance issues, such as replacing the roof and updating the auditorium rigging system.
The Royal Festival Hall, a Grade I listed building, will benefit from the £10 million grant to ensure its sustainability and accessibility for future generations. Michelle Walker, London Area Director for Arts Council England, emphasized the importance of supporting these essential improvements to preserve the creative spaces that artists and audiences in London rely on. The Southbank Centre received the largest portion of the £26 million funding allocated to 24 London organizations through the Creative Foundations Fund.
The funding arrives just in time for the Southbank Centre's 75th anniversary celebrations, which will include the annual Meltdown festival curated by Harry Styles and a special immersive performance titled 'You Are Here' to honor the venue's artistic legacy. This financial support will help maintain the Southbank Centre's status as a cultural hub and ensure its continued contribution to the arts scene in London.
