Waymo and Waze Collaborate to Improve Road Safety: Sharing Pothole Data with Cities

Two Alphabet-owned companies, Waymo and Waze, have joined forces to identify and share pothole data with cities. This collaboration involves a pilot program that will utilize data collected by Waymo's robotaxis to populate a free Waze platform tailored for cities. Initially focusing on five markets—Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area—the program aims to expand to more cities in the future.

Waymo, which operates in 11 cities commercially and is testing in others, has already pinpointed around 500 potholes in the initial markets. The data collected by Waymo's robotaxis, equipped with advanced sensors, will be accessible to cities and Waze users in the areas where Waymo operates. This initiative not only benefits cities in identifying and addressing road hazards but also engages the community in verifying the accuracy of reported pothole locations.

While other companies use sensors in vehicles or smartphones to gather traffic data, Waymo stands out by employing robotaxis for this purpose. By sharing valuable data on potholes and road conditions, Waymo aims to foster positive relationships with cities as it expands its operations to more than 20 cities this year. The pilot program was inspired by feedback from city officials, aiming to bridge reporting gaps and support cities in maintaining safer streets.

The collaboration between Waymo and Waze exemplifies the concept of corporate responsibility in enhancing public infrastructure. By sharing data that aids cities in addressing road issues promptly, Waymo demonstrates its commitment to improving road safety for all stakeholders. This initiative reflects a broader principle of accountability for companies operating on public roads to contribute to the betterment of urban environments.
