Michael" Biopic: Reshoots, Legal Issues, and a New Ending

The highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" is set to hit theaters soon, but not without significant changes. The film underwent extensive reshoots in 2025 due to legal issues, resulting in a new third act and a different overall theme. Originally intended to focus on the impact of child molestation allegations on Jackson's life, the film now ends with the pop star at the peak of his career during the "Bad" tour.
The reshoots added 22 more days of production and $15 million to the film's budget, bringing the total cost to $155 million. A legal misunderstanding led to a third of the film needing to be reshot, as the original cut featured content involving allegations made against Jackson by Jordan Chandler, which was prohibited due to a settlement with Jackson's estate.
The Jackson estate covered the additional costs of the reshoots, resulting in an equity stake in the film. The lead role is played by Jackson's nephew, Jafaar Jackson. The possibility of splitting the film into two parts was considered, with the first half potentially delayed to 2026. The film's release date was moved to April 2025, with hints of a potential sequel based on the ending.
Producer Graham King aims to turn "Michael" into a two-part story, with enough material for at least one more movie. Future films may focus on Jackson's later albums, the purchase of Neverland Ranch, and his love of animals. The handling of legal battles and abuse allegations in Jackson's final years remains uncertain. Lionsgate will release "Michael" in theaters on Friday, April 24.
