Update on CUSMA Negotiations: Trump Administration's Efforts and Potential Impact

The Trump administration is working to address issues with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) before July 1, but negotiations are expected to extend beyond that deadline, according to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. While not all issues may be resolved by July 1, progress is being made to address many of them and expedite the process.

CUSMA is currently undergoing a mandatory review this year as part of President Donald Trump's efforts to restructure global trade and attract key industries away from the U.S.'s closest neighbors. Prior to Trump's tariff actions, the majority of Canada's exported goods were sent to the U.S., while only a small percentage of U.S. exports were directed to Canada.

Greer mentioned at an event hosted by the Hudson Institute that the U.S. might consider exiting the North American trade pact to facilitate ongoing discussions. He noted that under the CUSMA sunset clause, a complete withdrawal from the agreement would take a decade.

In conclusion, the Trump administration is actively engaged in addressing issues within the CUSMA trade agreement, with efforts to resolve many of the challenges before the July 1 deadline. Despite the ongoing negotiations, the possibility of the U.S. exiting the pact remains a consideration to further advance trade discussions.
