When visitors come to Seattle, they often enjoy the iconic views of the Space Needle and downtown skyline from Puget Sound. Recently, a group of three killer whales has been making waves in the area, delighting whale watchers with their appearances just off downtown. These orcas, not previously seen in the Seattle region, have been spotted cruising by various shorelines, bringing joy to onlookers.
Photographer Hongming Zheng, who captures images of whales in his free time, embarked on a 10-hour journey to locate the mysterious pod of killer whales. The sighting was described as "epic" by Zheng and has sparked excitement among locals and tourists alike. Researchers track killer whales in the Salish Sea by identifying their fins and saddle patches, but this new pod of orcas was not part of any known catalog of local whales.
The three orcas were first spotted in Vancouver, British Columbia, in March, and further investigation revealed that they had been photographed in Alaska waters the previous year. Identified as T419, T420, and T421, these transient killer whales have distinctive circular scars from cookie-cutter sharks, indicating their time spent in the open ocean. While their exact origin is not confirmed, the leading theory is that they may be from Alaska, possibly the Aleutian region, based on their appearance and behavior.
Unlike the resident orcas that feed on endangered salmon, this pod of killer whales preys on sea mammals like harbor seals, sea lions, and porpoises, which are abundant in the Salish Sea. This culinary preference could explain why the orcas have traveled thousands of miles from their home range.
