Cherise Doyley's Unconventional Birth Story: Advocating for Representation and Informed Consent in Maternal Healthcare
Childbirth can often take unexpected turns, as one Florida woman experienced during her labor. Cherise Doyley, a professional birthing doula and mother of three, found herself in a unique situation at the University of Florida Health Hospital in September 2024. Initially planning for a ****l birth, Doyley faced concerns from hospital staff about the risk of uterine rupture, prompting discussions about the possibility of a C-section.
Uterine rupture, a rare but serious complication, can occur when the uterus tears or breaks open, particularly in individuals who have had previous cesarean sections. Despite Doyley's understanding of the risks and her preference for attempting a ****l delivery first, the hospital staff raised the option of a C-section due to her medical history.
During her labor, Doyley was surprised when nurses brought a tablet displaying a virtual court hearing with a judge and other officials. In a recording of the hearing, she expressed her astonishment at the situation and advocated for having an African-American doctor assigned to her care, citing the importance of representation in healthcare for better outcomes.
The disparities in maternal mortality rates between Black and White women highlight the impact of unconscious bias in healthcare. Research indicates that historical racial biases persist in medical settings, influencing perceptions and treatment decisions. Doyley's request for a BIPOC healthcare provider reflects a broader concern about equitable care and the need for diverse representation in the medical field.
Following the virtual court hearing, the judge did not immediately order a C-section but granted the hospital the authority to proceed with the surgery in case of an emergency. Subsequently, Doyley underwent a C-section after her baby's heart rate dropped, leading to the birth of her daughter. Despite the outcome, Doyley expressed her concerns about using legal means to enforce medical procedures against a patient's wishes, emphasizing the importance of informed consent and respectful care in childbirth.
