Rep. Seth Moulton Criticizes Polymarket's Betting on U.S. Pilot's Fate

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) criticized the prediction platform Polymarket for allowing bets on the discovery date of a U.S. pilot shot down over Iran. Moulton expressed his disgust at the idea of people betting on the fate of individuals who could be their neighbors, friends, or family members. Following the recent downing of a U.S. fighter jet over Iran, with one crew member rescued and others unaccounted for, Moulton highlighted the insensitivity of such bets. He also raised concerns about Donald Trump Jr.'s investment in Polymarket potentially granting him access to non-public intelligence. In response to criticism, Polymarket introduced measures to prevent politicians from betting on specific polls to curb insider trading. Moulton and other lawmakers have been vocal in their opposition to prediction markets, with Moulton even prohibiting his staff from engaging in trading on such platforms. The misuse of prediction markets, as seen in threatening messages sent to an Israeli journalist over a poll related to the Israeli-Iran conflict, has raised alarms about the potential for corruption and harm to society. Moulton emphasized the need to address the perverse incentive structure created by such platforms, which he believes poses a significant threat to American society.
