Coast Guard and Puerto Rican Police Rescue Mission near Goat Island: A Tale of Collaboration and Heroism

The U.S. Coast Guard collaborated with Puerto Rican police to rescue three federal agents and two individuals following the capsizing of two boats near Puerto Rico's "Goat Island." The rescue operation took place in challenging conditions, including rough seas and darkness, and was documented on video. The Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action alerted Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan about a capsized vessel off the islet's coast on Tuesday evening. Responding to the distress call, the Coast Guard deployed a 45-foot response boat and a Jayhawk helicopter, along with assistance from a Customs and Border Protection Caribbean Air and Marine Branch marine unit and a Puerto Rico police helicopter. A "Good Samaritan" also reported the capsized 22-foot vessel and two individuals clinging to it, providing a position for the responding assets. Despite encountering 10-foot swells, the CBP marine unit capsized in the rough waves, leading to the agents being thrown into the water. The Coast Guard response boat attempted to reach the agents and boaters but faced challenges due to sea conditions and the location of the capsized vessel. The Puerto Rican police helicopter successfully rescued one boater and one agent, transporting them to the island. Subsequently, the Coast Guard's Jayhawk helicopter arrived on the scene, deploying a rescue swimmer who successfully retrieved the remaining two agents and boater. All five survivors were taken to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, where they received treatment for minor injuries. Lt. David Tirado-Tolosa, the Jayhawk helicopter aircraft commander, commended the collaborative efforts of the rescue teams, emphasizing the quick actions of the Puerto Rican police and CBP unit that facilitated the prompt rescue of all individuals. Goat Island, also known as Isla de Cabras, is a small islet located at the mouth of San Juan Bay. Initially connected to the main island by a submerged sandbank, the island became accessible after land reclamation in the 1940s. Surrounded by reefs and shoals, Goat Island features historical sites, parks, and viewpoints, making it a notable location in the region. The successful rescue operation near Goat Island highlights the importance of coordinated efforts and swift response in ensuring the safety of individuals in distress at sea.
