Trademark Infringement Lawsuit: Maren Flagg vs. Taylor Swift and UMG Recordings Inc.

A new lawsuit has been filed against Taylor Swift and UMG Recordings Inc. by a Las Vegas performer, Maren Flagg, alleging trademark infringement. The complaint states that Swift's album title, "The Life of a Showgirl," is too similar to Flagg's trademark, "Confessions of a Showgirl," causing confusion among consumers. Flagg, known professionally as Maren Wade, seeks to prevent Swift from using the title.

Flagg, a performer, began using the "Showgirl" mark in 2014 for her column in Las Vegas Weekly and later for a live show. She registered "Confessions of a Showgirl" with the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2015. The lawsuit claims that Swift's infringement could harm Flagg's brand and alleges that Swift and UMG were aware of Flagg's rights due to a previous trademark refusal.

Swift, known for enforcing trademark law, has more than 170 active and pending trademark registrations through her intellectual property management company, TAS Rights Management LLC, which is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Flagg is seeking monetary damages and a court order to stop Swift, UMG, TAS, and Bravado International Group Merchandising Services Inc. from using "The Life of a Showgirl."

The lawsuit emphasizes the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and preventing confusion among consumers. Flagg's attorney, Jaymie Parkkinen of Santa Monica, Calif., is representing her in the case. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California under the case name Flagg v. Swift.
