Seoul's Commercial Districts Thrive with Influx of Foreign Visitors During BTS Concert: Seongsu-dong Emerges as a Fashion Destination

Seoul experienced a significant influx of foreign visitors in major commercial districts during BTS' concert earlier this month. The Jung Ward, home to the renowned Myeongdong shopping area, welcomed over 78,000 foreigners on the day of the concert, marking a 15.1 percent increase from the previous year. Similarly, Jongno Ward, Mapo Ward, Gangnam Ward, and Yongsan Ward also saw a surge in foreign visitors, with Seongdong Ward, including Seongsu-dong, recording a notable increase of 52.6 percent in foreign travelers.

The Korea Tourism Organisation's data, based on roaming services by SK Telecom Co., highlighted the growing popularity of Seongsu-dong as a shopping destination, particularly among younger consumers. Foreign spending in Seongsu-dong witnessed a significant rise, with Musinsa Standard's Seongsu outlet experiencing a 69 percent surge in sales compared to the previous year. The trend continued over a three-day period, with foreign sales in Seongsu-dong outpacing those in Myeongdong.

According to industry experts, foreign visitors attending BTS concerts in Korea, predominantly young women, are keen on exploring and experiencing the latest fashion, beauty, and food trends in the country. This trend has contributed to the emergence of Seongsu-dong as a new commercial hub, attracting a diverse range of international visitors seeking unique shopping and cultural experiences.
