China Launches Counter-Probes into U.S. Trade Practices: Reciprocal Investigations and Trade Truce Updates

China's commerce ministry has launched two counter-probes into U.S. practices that impede the entry of Chinese products into the U.S. The investigations are a response to U.S. Section 301 investigations against China and are described as reciprocal. The trade truce between the two countries has been maintained since President Trump's meeting with President Xi Jinping in October. Trump is set to visit Beijing in mid-May as part of efforts to reset relations in the Asia-Pacific region. The Chinese investigations are expected to conclude within six months but may be extended further. China will take corresponding measures to protect its rights and interests based on the findings of the investigations.

The U.S. recently initiated two trade investigations into excess industrial capacity in 16 trading partners, including China, and forced labor. China has expressed concerns about these investigations during bilateral trade talks in Paris. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao reiterated these concerns during talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Cameroon. However, China also expressed willingness to enhance economic and trade cooperation with the U.S.
