Stephen Colbert to Pen New Lord of the Rings Film: Hunt for Gollum

Stephen Colbert has been chosen to write a new movie in the Lord of the Rings franchise. This upcoming film will follow Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, which is currently in development under the direction of Andy Serkis. The cast for Hunt for Gollum includes Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and possibly Elijah Wood reprising their roles. The story of Hunt for Gollum takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies, focusing on Aragorn and Gandalf's search for Gollum to uncover more about Bilbo's ring, which is revealed to be the One Ring that poses a threat to Middle Earth during the events of Lord of the Rings.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the team behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, are producing two new Gollum films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's books. Zane Weiner is also involved in producing The Hunt for Gollum. The new movie, produced by Warner Bros.' New Line division, is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
