U.S. Happiness Rankings: Insights from the 2026 World Happiness Report and Happy City Index

The latest World Happiness Report 2026 revealed that the United States has improved its ranking to become the 23rd happiest country globally. However, the country has consistently fallen outside the top 20 in recent years. The Happy City Index, which evaluates the happiness of cities based on various indicators like inclusive policies and housing affordability, also showed that the U.S. has fewer cities in the top ranks compared to previous years. European cities dominated the top spots, with Copenhagen, Denmark, leading the list. San Francisco was the only U.S. city to make it to the gold group, ranking 45th overall. The U.S. had 16 cities in the Index, down from 18 in 2025, with cities like Washington D.C. and Los Angeles missing the mark this year. Newcomers to the list included Austin, Denver, and Atlanta. The report highlights the impact of social policies on the happiness of cities and provides meaningful comparisons across the globe. The Happy City Index aims to showcase the positive outcomes of effective social policies and urban planning.
