Central Park Heroism: Bystanders Thwart Attempted Rape, Suspect Arrested

A man, identified as Lateef Caldwell, was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a woman in Central Park. The incident occurred near 109th Street and East Drive in the park around 5:40 p.m. A group of bystanders intervened and prevented the attack. Caldwell was apprehended by nearby police officers and charged with attempted rape, attempted sex abuse, and sex abuse. His arraignment was scheduled for the following day.

This is not the first time Caldwell has been involved in such crimes. In 2022, he was arrested for an attempted rape in Manhattan, where he tried to assault a 23-year-old woman on East 13th Street. Subsequently, he was convicted of sexual abuse in 2023 and was released from prison last year, as per Department of Corrections records.

The quick response of the bystanders and law enforcement in Central Park prevented a potentially dangerous situation. The victim was fortunate to have help nearby, and Caldwell was swiftly taken into custody. It is crucial for communities to remain vigilant and ready to assist those in need to ensure the safety of all individuals.
