Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau Summoned to Testify on Bilingual Communication Controversy

The House of Commons Official Languages Committee unanimously voted to summon Rousseau to testify by May 1, expressing disappointment over the lack of bilingual communication. The video message released by Rousseau, expressing sorrow over the deaths of two pilots, was primarily in English with brief French greetings at the beginning and end, accompanied by subtitles in both languages.
The crash occurred at LaGuardia Airport when a Jazz Aviation aircraft, operating as an Air Canada Express flight from Montreal, collided with a fire truck on the runway, resulting in injuries to over 40 passengers and crew members and the tragic loss of the two pilots. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon deemed the English-only message unacceptable, citing Air Canada's legal obligation to communicate in both official languages. Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet criticized Rousseau's leadership, particularly in light of the French-speaking pilot's tragic death.
Quebec's Minister of the French language, Jean-François Roberge, condemned the message as disrespectful and unacceptable. Air Canada defended Rousseau, stating that his French fluency was insufficient to deliver such a sensitive message in that language. This incident follows previous criticism in 2021 when Rousseau predominantly spoke in English during a speech in Montreal, promising to enhance his French proficiency. Appointed as President and CEO of Air Canada in February 2021, Rousseau's language abilities have been a subject of scrutiny.
