Federal Immigration Agents Assist with Airport Security Amid Shutdown Uncertainty
President Donald Trump has directed federal immigration agents to assist with airport security to alleviate long wait times and congestion at U.S. airports. The move comes as a result of a budget impasse that has left hundreds of thousands of homeland security workers, including TSA agents, working without pay. Democrats are seeking changes in the conduct of federal immigration agents, leading to a standoff over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
White House border czar Tom Homan has been tasked with leading this effort and is working with a bipartisan group of senators to address the partial shutdown. The Senate is expected to vote on the confirmation of Sen. Markwayne Mullin as the next homeland security secretary. Homan has stated that the increased role of U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement at airports will be determined through discussions with TSA and ICE leadership.
ICE agents could potentially cover exit lanes at airports, freeing up TSA agents to focus on screening lines. Homan emphasized the need to prioritize large airports with long wait times. While ICE agents can provide additional security, there are limitations to their roles, such as operating X-ray machines.
President Trump announced on social media that ICE agents would be deployed to airports to support TSA agents during the shutdown. Travelers at airports like Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and New York's JFK International Airport faced long lines and delays. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed concerns about the uncertainty passengers are experiencing regarding wait times.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries raised concerns about deploying untrained ICE agents at airports nationwide. The goal of the initiative is to ease travel for the American people and address the challenges posed by the shutdown. Discussions and planning are ongoing to determine the specific roles and responsibilities of ICE agents at airports to enhance security and streamline operations.
