Tragic Attack on Healthcare Facility in East Darfur: Innocent Lives Lost in Sudan's Conflict

Healthcare facilities have become frequent targets in the ongoing conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in Sudan. A recent attack on a healthcare facility in East Darfur resulted in the tragic deaths of 64 individuals and left 89 others injured, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Among the deceased were 13 children, as stated by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on social media.

The United Nations' humanitarian office in Sudan expressed shock and dismay over the assault on the El-Daein Teaching Hospital, condemning the reported killing of dozens, including children, and injuring many more. The Emergency Lawyers, a Sudanese rights group that documents atrocities in the conflict, attributed the attack to an army drone strike on the hospital in East Darfur.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) control the vast western Darfur region, while the army holds authority in Sudan's east, center, and north. The WHO's Surveillance System for Attacks confirmed the incident on Friday, noting that it involved violence with heavy weapons and impacted a secondary healthcare facility, medical personnel, patients, supplies, and storage.

Despite documenting and verifying attacks on healthcare facilities, the WHO does not assign blame as it is not an investigative agency. El-Daein, the RSF-controlled state capital of East Darfur, has been a frequent target of army attacks as they aim to push the paramilitary forces back towards their Darfur strongholds and away from Sudan's central corridor.

The use of drone strikes has become a common tactic in Sudan's brutal conflict, resulting in the deaths of numerous civilians, particularly in the Southern Kordofan region. The UN rights chief expressed shock over the increasing use of powerful drones to deploy explosive weapons in populated areas, leading to widespread casualties.

In conclusion, the recent attack on the healthcare facility in East Darfur highlights the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, with innocent civilians, including children, bearing the brunt of the violence. The international community must work towards finding a peaceful resolution to end the senseless bloodshed and protect the lives of those caught in the crossfire.
