Ensuring Fair Play: The Impact of the SCORE Act on College Sports and Student-Athletes

As a former Division I women’s volleyball player at two universities, I recognize the importance of fair play in college sports. Referees are essential to upholding the integrity of the game and ensuring a level playing field.

The Student Compensation and Opportunity through Rights and Endorsements (SCORE) Act aims to bring consistency and fairness to the name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights of student-athletes. This bipartisan federal reform seeks to provide clear guidelines for student-athletes to monetize their talents.

The current landscape of NIL rights is chaotic, with varying laws across states and ongoing legal battles. This uncertainty creates an unfair environment for the over half a million student-athletes participating in college sports each year.

Non-revenue sports, like women's and Olympic sports, are particularly vulnerable to the impact of NIL rights without proper regulation. These programs often face budget cuts and play a crucial role in developing elite athletes for international competitions.

Congress is urged to intervene and establish uniform standards to address the challenges faced by student-athletes. The SCORE Act is gaining momentum and offers enforceable national guidelines to ensure fairness and protect the educational mission of college sports.

The bill includes provisions to support women's and Olympic sports, as well as investments in athlete well-being and healthcare. It also addresses concerns about the potential shift to an employer-employee model for student-athletes, which could impact their relationships with coaches and the overall college experience.

College sports are a cherished American tradition that instills important values like teamwork and dedication. Legislative action is necessary to preserve the integrity of college athletics and provide opportunities for young athletes to pursue higher education through their athletic abilities.

The SCORE Act aims to strike a balance between fair competition and academic opportunities in college sports. By implementing federal NIL reform, we can strengthen our institutions and support the development of future American leaders through athletics.
