Val Kilmer's Legacy Lives On: The Role of Father Fintan in 'As Deep as the Grave

Val Kilmer was set to play the role of Father Fintan in the film "As Deep as the Grave" before his death in 2025. Due to his battle with throat cancer, he was unable to film any scenes for the movie. However, the writer and director of the film, Coerte Voorhees, was able to incorporate Kilmer into the ensemble using state-of-the-art generative AI technology with the support of Kilmer's family, particularly his daughter Mercedes.

The film, previously titled "Canyon of the Dead," follows the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, as they trace the history of the Navajo people. The project features Abigail Lawrie and Tom Felton in leading roles, with the AI-generated version of Val Kilmer appearing in a significant part of the film. The production utilizes younger images of Kilmer and footage from his final years to portray his character at different stages of life, along with his voice affected by a tracheal procedure.

Despite facing challenges during the six-year production, including shutdowns due to the COVID pandemic, the filmmakers were determined to include scenes involving Father Fintan, played by Kilmer. The decision to use AI technology to recreate the actor's likeness sparked debate within the creative community, but the Voorhees brothers aimed to showcase the ethical use of AI in filmmaking. They followed SAG guidelines and compensated Kilmer's estate for his appearance in the film.

Mercedes Kilmer expressed her support for the project, emphasizing her father's interest in emerging technologies for storytelling. Val Kilmer had previously collaborated with Sonantic to create an AI-powered speaking voice for his role in "Top Gun: Maverick," citing the importance of communication despite the challenges posed by throat cancer. The film "As Deep as the Grave" pays tribute to Kilmer's legacy and his connection to the American Southwest, where he resided in New Mexico.

The use of generative AI technology in the film represents a unique approach to storytelling and character portrayal, bridging the gap between historical context and the actor's personal experiences. By incorporating Kilmer's likeness and voice through AI, the filmmakers aim to honor his memory and contribute to the evolving landscape of filmmaking.
