The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced new helicopter safety rules and will suspend the use of visual separation between airplanes and helicopters near major airports. This decision comes after a mid-air collision in January 2025 that resulted in the deaths of 67 people. The FAA highlighted recent incidents, including a near miss between an American Airlines flight and a police helicopter near the San Antonio airport, as reasons for the new rules.
In response to these incidents, the FAA will now require air traffic controllers to use radar to maintain specific lateral or vertical distances between helicopters and aircraft when they cross airport arrival or departure paths. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford emphasized the need to move away from an overreliance on pilot "see and avoid" operations, especially in busy airspace near airports. The FAA's year-long review identified the limitations of visual separation as a safety tool and the importance of implementing radar-based measures to prevent accidents.
Following the 2025 collision, the FAA had already imposed restrictions on helicopter traffic around Reagan Washington National Airport and other airports like Baltimore, Las Vegas, and Washington Dulles.
