Mr. Nobody Against Putin: A Documentary of Resistance and Truth
Following the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin, Karabash Elementary School in Russia was instructed to implement a patriotic curriculum. Pasha Talankin, the school's videographer, was tasked with capturing the indoctrination efforts. Despite his love for his students, Talankin despised the war and the government's propaganda. He decided to document everything, leading to the creation of the documentary "Mr. Nobody Against Putin," co-directed by Talankin and David Borenstein. The film sheds light on the propaganda and indoctrination in Russian schools, showcasing the moral dilemma faced by individuals like Talankin.
Over a span of two years, Talankin recorded various instances of pro-war assemblies, paramilitary training, and student drafts for the conflict in Ukraine. His defiance against the regime, such as playing the American anthem instead of Russia's, put him at risk of severe consequences. Despite the potential dangers, Talankin continued to film, driven by the belief that the truth needed to be exposed. The documentary has garnered international recognition, winning awards and nominations, while facing indifference from the Kremlin.
Talankin's decision to escape to Turkey and live in exile reflects the personal sacrifices made in the pursuit of truth and resistance against oppressive regimes. The film serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of propaganda on society and the importance of standing up against injustice. Talankin's bravery and commitment to revealing the truth have transformed him from "Mr. Nobody" to a symbol of resistance and courage in the face of adversity.
