Mau P, the current cover star of Billboard, visited the Billboard House @ SXSW to discuss his music and upcoming headlining performance at The Concourse Project in Austin. Originally scheduled for Billboard Presents THE STAGE at SXSW 2026, the show was relocated due to severe weather. In a conversation with Billboard's senior music correspondent, Mau P shared his musical influences, including Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, and jazz from his father, who was a session musician and music teacher. Growing up in a musical household, Mau had easy access to various instruments and considered music as a fallback career option alongside design and camera operation.
Transitioning from his previous persona as Maurice West, Mau P has developed a unique sound that blends dark grooves, sensuality, and playfulness. Drawing from his experience in the mainstage EDM scene, he aimed to create music that was both sexy and club-friendly, moving away from the focus on big festival stages. This evolution in sound has allowed him to perform at diverse venues, from massive festivals to intimate parties, showcasing his DJing skills and musical versatility.
In addition to his live performances, Mau P is currently working on his debut album, focusing on creating timeless music that resonates beyond current trends.
