Toyota Recalls 550,000 Highlander SUVs for Seat Back Defect: What You Need to Know
Toyota has announced a recall of approximately 550,000 Highlander SUVs due to a supplier defect that could lead to seat back failures. The affected vehicles are Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models from 2021 to 2024, equipped with recliner technology in the second-row seats. This technology allows occupants to adjust the seat angle, but there is a risk of the assembly teeth failing to fully engage in a locked position, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The faulty recliner technology, produced by Toyota Boshoku Indiana, poses a safety risk as unsecured seat backs may not properly restrain occupants in the event of a crash at higher speeds. Toyota identified the issue during an inspection at an assembly plant in October 2023 and later discovered a design change by the supplier in July 2024, prompting further investigations. As a result, Toyota decided to issue a voluntary safety recall in February.
Affected car owners will receive notification letters from Toyota on April 20. They can then bring their vehicles to a dealer for a free replacement of the defective technology. The recall numbers assigned by Toyota are 26TB06 and 26TA06. It is essential for owners of the affected Highlander models to take action promptly to ensure their safety on the road.
