Southwest Airlines Shifts Focus to Midway Airport: Ending Service at O'Hare

Southwest Airlines has announced that it will be ending its service to O’Hare Airport this year. The decision to discontinue service to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on June 4 was made as part of the airline's efforts to refine its network. Despite this change, Southwest will continue to operate flights out of Midway International Airport. The airline expressed confidence in its ability to serve Chicagoland through Midway, where it currently serves more than 80 destinations, including 15 markets previously served from O’Hare. Southwest's operations at O’Hare were relatively short-lived, as they only began service from the airport in 2021.
Employees impacted by the decision to discontinue service at O’Hare will have the opportunity to bid for open positions across Southwest's network, including at Midway. The airline is committed to supporting its employees during this transition. Southwest's decision to focus its operations on Midway reflects its strategic approach to optimizing its network and providing efficient service to customers. As Southwest continues to evolve its route network, it remains dedicated to serving the Chicagoland area effectively and meeting the travel needs of its passengers.
