Preserving a Legacy: Quincy Jones' Music Catalog Acquired by HarbourView Equity Partners

The Quincy Jones family has struck a deal with HarbourView Equity Partners to acquire a significant portion of his music catalog, which includes his share in iconic Michael Jackson albums like Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad. The agreement covers Jones’ recorded music and publishing rights, not limited to the Jackson albums but also encompassing his own compositions like “Soul Bossa Nova” and George Benson’s hit “Give Me the Night,” along with his involvement in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Quincy Jones, a multifaceted music figure who passed away in November 2024 at 91, left a lasting impact on the music industry as a trumpeter, composer, arranger, producer, conductor, and scorer.

Quincy Jones III (QD3) praised his father for creating not just hits but platforms that influenced culture in music, film, media, and technology. Rashida Jones, his daughter, highlighted his ability to connect various elements long before the term “multi-platform” was coined, citing his works like Thriller, The Color Purple, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Vibe. HarbourView Equity Partners’ CEO, Sherrese Clarke, expressed gratitude for acquiring Jones’ catalog, emphasizing the firm’s dedication to honoring his legacy. Clarke mentioned that Jones likely received a 10 percent royalty from the three Jackson albums, which have collectively sold over 100 million copies worldwide, clarifying that the Jackson estate was not part of the transaction.

In addition to the Jackson albums and his own compositions, the deal includes Quincy Jones’ stake in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, as well as his songwriting contributions to Kanye West’s “Good Life” and Tupac’s “How Do U Want It.” It also covers the theme songs for Ironsides and Sanford and Son. HarbourView Equity Partners and the Jones estate will collaborate on future projects related to the catalog and Jones’ legacy, although specific plans have not been disclosed. A tribute event honoring Jones is set for March 13 in Los Angeles, preceding the Academy Awards.

The acquisition of Quincy Jones’ music catalog by HarbourView Equity Partners marks a significant milestone in preserving the legacy of a legendary music icon. The deal not only secures Jones’ contributions to classic albums like those of Michael Jackson but also ensures that his diverse body of work, spanning various genres and mediums, will continue to inspire future generations. As the music industry navigates the evolving landscape of commerce and artistry, partnerships like this one serve as a testament to the enduring impact of visionary creators like Quincy Jones.
