Federal Judge Rules in Favor of AFGE National V.A. Council: Reinstates Union Contract for V.A. Workers

A federal judge in Rhode Island has ruled in favor of the American Federation of Government Workers National V.A. Council, ordering the Trump administration to reinstate a union contract with over 300,000 Veterans Affairs Department workers. The judge found that the termination of the contract by V.A. Secretary Doug Collins was retaliatory and violated the First Amendment. The contract, which was ratified in June 2023, will be reinstated for the remainder of its term to prevent further losses for the union and its members.
The union had argued that the decision to end the contract was linked to its opposition to President Trump's policies. Judge Melissa R. Dubose acknowledged the union's history of opposing labor policy changes and cited anti-labor statements by V.A. Secretary Collins as evidence of the agency's focus on unions hindering its work. The judge's ruling overturned the administration's attempt to nullify the contract and recognized the union's right to collective bargaining.
The decision was celebrated by the National V.A. Council president, Mary Jean Burke, who praised the ruling as a victory against the administration's efforts to silence V.A. workers. The reinstatement of the contract provides stability for the union and its members, ensuring their rights are protected in the workplace. This ruling highlights the importance of upholding collective bargaining rights for federal workers and the role of unions in advocating for their members' interests.
