Meta Acquires Moltbook: Advancing AI Agents in the Social Network Space

Meta has recently acquired the social network Moltbook, a platform designed specifically for AI agents. The purchase was made by Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), led by Alexandr Wang, and the deal includes bringing Moltbook founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr on board. The transaction is set to be finalized in mid-March, with both founders joining MSL on March 16. Existing Moltbook customers will still have access to the platform, although Meta has hinted that this arrangement may change in the future.
Launched in late January 2026, Moltbook serves as an experimental space for AI agents, functioning similarly to Reddit but exclusively for autonomous AI agents. Humans can only observe or interact through the AI agents on the platform. Within a few days of its launch, approximately 1.5 million AI agents had registered on Moltbook. Founder Matt Schlicht has been working on autonomous AI agents since 2023, with the help of his personal AI assistant named Clawd Clawderberg. Co-founder Ben Parr, a former editor at Mashable and CNET, also played a key role in developing Moltbook.
Moltbook was created to work in conjunction with OpenClaw, an open agent platform for AI assistants. OpenAI recently acquired the developer of OpenClaw, Peter Steinberger, and the project is now supported as open source. Meta had initially considered bringing Peter Steinberger on board but ultimately decided to acquire the Moltbook team instead. This move aligns with Meta's focus on advancing autonomous AI agents and integrating them into its product lineup.
Meta's acquisition of Moltbook signifies its commitment to enhancing its capabilities in the autonomous AI agent space. Vishal Shah of Meta highlighted that the Moltbook team has introduced innovative ways for agents to interact, share content, and coordinate complex tasks. The platform also features a verification system that links AI agents to their human owners, which could be strategically beneficial for Meta as it continues to develop AI projects and incorporate autonomous agents into its offerings.
The acquisition of Moltbook by Meta reflects the intensifying competition among major tech companies in the realm of AI agent technology. While OpenAI secured the OpenClaw developer, Meta has now brought the expertise of the Moltbook founders into its Superintelligence Labs. This strategic move underscores Meta's commitment to advancing AI capabilities and staying at the forefront of technological innovation.
