Sag Harbor Postpones Release of Justin Timberlake's Drunk-Driving Arrest Footage

The village of Sag Harbor, N.Y., has decided to postpone the release of footage showing singer Justin Timberlake's 2024 drunk-driving arrest following a lawsuit filed by the singer to prevent the footage from being made public. The authorities had intended to release eight hours of footage captured by officers' body cameras depicting Mr. Timberlake's arrest on June 18, 2024. However, Mr. Timberlake's legal team argued that releasing the footage would violate his privacy and cause him undue humiliation.

Mr. Timberlake's lawyers expressed concerns about the potential harm that public exposure could bring, including stigma, reputational damage, and a loss of privacy. The police department in Sag Harbor had informed Mr. Timberlake's defense lawyer that they planned to release the video with redactions in response to a public-records request. Despite objections from Mr. Timberlake's legal team, the police intended to proceed with the release.

In response to the impending release of the footage, Mr. Timberlake sought an emergency order from the State Supreme Court in Suffolk County to prevent its disclosure. However, the judge did not immediately act on the request during a court meeting. The Law Office of Vincent Toomey, representing Sag Harbor, announced that the video's release was on hold as they attempted to reach a resolution with Mr. Timberlake and his lawyers.

The incident leading to Mr. Timberlake's arrest occurred in August 2024 when he was pulled over for driving his BMW through a stop sign. Police reported that Mr. Timberlake displayed signs of impairment, such as glassy eyes and the smell of alcohol, during roadside sobriety tests. Following his guilty plea to a charge of driving while impaired in September 2024, Mr. Timberlake agreed to pay a fine of $500 and complete 25 hours of community service at a charity of his choice.

Despite the arrest, Mr. Timberlake's world tour continued, with only the final show being canceled for reasons unrelated to the incident. The authorities did not specify the extent of the footage they intended to release or which parts would be redacted. The situation remains unresolved as officials work towards a resolution with Mr. Timberlake and his legal team.
