European Union Prime Ministers Call for Action on 'My Voice, My Choice' Initiative for Abortion Access

Five European Union prime ministers have jointly urged the European Commission to take action on a citizen-led initiative that aims to secure funding for improving access to abortion services within the EU. The initiative, known as "My Voice, My Choice," has garnered 1.1 million signatures and has received support from the European Parliament. The leaders emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own bodies without facing legal, financial, or geographical obstacles. They called on the European Commission to consider how the initiative could be put into effect to promote fundamental rights, dignity, and equality for women in the EU. Abortion laws vary significantly across the EU member states, with some countries having more restrictive regulations than others. The initiative does not seek to change national laws but rather aims to create a voluntary mechanism that member states can opt into to provide safe and legal abortion services to those in need. The European Commission is expected to respond to the matter later on Thursday.
