OSHA Fines Three Companies $247,000 for Fatal Incident at Weld County Dairy Farm

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently announced fines totaling $247,000 for three companies involved in a tragic incident at a Weld County dairy farm. The incident resulted in the deaths of six individuals due to exposure to hazardous gas. Prospect Ranch LLC, the operator of Prospect Valley Dairy, was fined $132,406 for various violations related to worker safety. Fiske and HD Builders were also fined $99,306 and $14,897, respectively, for failing to protect employees from atmospheric hazards and provide necessary training.
An investigation by OSHA revealed that a pipe in the manure management system at Prospect Valley Dairy had disconnected, releasing manure water and hydrogen sulfide gas. Contractors from Fiske and HD Builders were working on the system when the incident occurred. Tragically, two employees, one from Fiske and one from Prospect Ranch, lost their lives while attempting to stop the gas flow. Subsequently, three more Fiske employees and one Prospect Ranch employee entered the pump room and also succumbed to the gas exposure.
The companies cited by OSHA have the option to comply with the citations, request an informal conference, or contest the findings within 15 business days. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe work environment and providing adequate training to employees to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
