Northeast Blizzard Chaos: Travel Bans, Flight Cancellations, and Historic Snowfall
A powerful winter storm is wreaking havoc in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, leading to travel bans and flight cancellations. Over 40 million people are under blizzard warnings, facing treacherous road conditions and limited visibility due to heavy snowfall and high winds. New York City, Long Island, and Westchester, New York, as well as New Jersey, have imposed travel restrictions, with officials urging residents to stay home unless absolutely necessary.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul predicts that this storm could go down in history as one of the top 10 worst winter storms in the last 150 years. Parts of New Jersey and Long Island have already received nearly two feet of snow, with blizzard conditions causing chaos on Interstate 95 between New York City and Boston. Drivers in Connecticut are struggling with snow-covered highways, leading to traffic delays and accidents.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has advised residents to stay indoors as New England braces for up to two feet of snow. Power outages have affected over 400,000 customers across the East Coast, particularly in Massachusetts and New Jersey. Flight cancellations have surpassed 10,000 through Tuesday, with major hubs like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia experiencing the most disruptions.
Airlines preemptively canceled flights ahead of the storm, resulting in thousands of cancellations on Monday and Tuesday. Over 1,300 flights have already been grounded for Tuesday, with airlines aiming to resume service in some areas. The situation remains fluid as the storm continues to impact travel and daily life in the affected regions.
