Survival Story: Rafter Rescued After Five Days Alone in Oregon Wilderness

A rafter, Gabriel Vaughn, who went missing during a trip on Oregon's Illinois River, was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter after surviving alone in the wilderness for five days.
Vaughn was last seen near Greenwall Rapids while rafting with a group and had ventured into the woods wearing a blue dry suit, helmet, and life jacket, intending to hike towards the Chetco drainage.
Following his disappearance, a search operation involving the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and the U.S. Coast Guard was initiated to locate Vaughn.
The Coast Guard deployed an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station North Bend to conduct aerial searches after a request for assistance from the Oregon Search and Rescue coordinator.
Vaughn was eventually found by a private party in the Illinois River Valley, two miles downstream from his last known location, and was unable to be evacuated on foot due to injuries to his hands and feet.
A Coast Guard helicopter was called in to hoist Vaughn to safety, and he was transported to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay for evaluation.
Details about how Vaughn survived in the wilderness and the extent of his injuries were not immediately disclosed by authorities.
The successful rescue operation, which involved coordination between federal and local responders, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in search and rescue missions.
