Democrats Plan Counter Rallies and Alternative Programming in Response to Trump's State of the Union Address

Senator Adam Schiff from California is among the Democrats who have decided to boycott President Trump's upcoming State of the Union address. Instead, Schiff will be speaking at a counter rally called the "People's State of the Union" on the National Mall, organized by MeidasTouch and MoveOn Civic Action. Other Democratic speakers at the event include Senators Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, and Tina Smith, as well as several House members. This counter rally is part of the Democrats' efforts to protest Trump's State of the Union address on February 24.
In addition to the "People's State of the Union" rally, another event called the "State of the Swamp" is scheduled at the National Press Club on the same night. Some Democrats have indicated that they may attend one of these counter rallies instead of the State of the Union address, while others have chosen to skip the event entirely. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries mentioned that members of his caucus could either attend the address with "silent defiance" or participate in alternative programming around the Capitol complex.
Last year, Trump's address to Congress was met with dissent from Democrats, including a staged walkout and disruptive behavior. Senator John Fetterman cautioned against similar disruptive actions during this year's speech, emphasizing the importance of showing respect for the office. Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia is set to deliver the Democratic response to Trump's address.
In conclusion, Democrats are planning various counterprogramming events to protest President Trump's State of the Union address, with Senator Adam Schiff and other prominent Democrats choosing to participate in alternative rallies rather than attending the official event. The focus is on expressing dissent in a dignified manner while still making their voices heard.
