Trapped in Avalanche: Skiers' Harrowing Ordeal in Nevada County, California

A group of skiers in Nevada County, California, found themselves trapped in an avalanche while on a backcountry run. Out of the 15 skiers, six were rescued, but nine remained missing in the Castle Peak area, north of Lake Tahoe. The rescued skiers had various injuries, with two of them requiring hospital treatment. They had sought shelter in a makeshift structure made of tarps and communicated with rescue teams using a radio beacon and text messages.

Rescue crews faced challenging conditions due to a severe winter storm that had hit California, making it difficult to reach the trapped skiers. The Tahoe National Forest lead avalanche forecaster highlighted the heightened danger in the backcountry during the storm. The extreme weather conditions forced several ski resorts in the area to close partially or completely.

The avalanche occurred on the final day of a three-day backcountry skiing trip, where the group had covered rugged mountainous terrain for up to 4 miles. They had to carry all their supplies and food with them during the trip. The group, led by Blackbird Mountain Guides, was returning to the trailhead when the avalanche struck. The company is collaborating with authorities on the rescue efforts.

According to Reuters, an average of 27 people lose their lives in avalanches in the U.S. each year. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with backcountry skiing and the importance of being prepared for unexpected events in the wilderness.
