Days of Ash: U2's Powerful Political EP Sparks Conversations and Advocacy

U2 has made a comeback with a surprise EP titled Days of Ash, featuring six songs that touch on various political issues worldwide. The tracks, including "American Obituary," "The Tears Of Things," "Song Of The Future," "Wildpeace," "One Life At A Time," and "Yours Eternally (ft. Ed Sheeran & Taras Topolia)," are now available on streaming platforms with lyric videos for each.
Bono expressed his excitement about the band reuniting in the studio after a long break and shared that the EP's songs are different in mood and theme from those planned for their upcoming album. The EP reflects defiance, dismay, and lamentation, with celebratory songs in the works to follow.
The EP opens with "American Obituary," a tribute to Renee Good, who was killed by ICE officers during a protest in Minneapolis. Bono's lyrics convey a powerful message about the tragic incident and the impact on her family.
"The Tears of Things" draws inspiration from Richard Rohr's book and explores the conflict between Israel and Gaza through an imaginary conversation between Michelangelo and David. Bono highlights the emotional turmoil and calls for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
"Song of the Future" pays homage to Sarina Esmailzadeh, a young Iranian activist who lost her life in the Women, Life, Freedom movement. Bono criticizes the oppressive actions of certain groups and emphasizes the need for a more compassionate and understanding society.
"Wildpeace" features a poem by Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai read by Adeola Fayehun, accompanied by music by Jackknife Lee. Bono reflects on the haunting beauty of Fayehun's voice and the broader implications of conflicts beyond the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
"One Life at a Time" is dedicated to Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian consultant who was killed by an Israeli settler. The song underscores the importance of individual actions in shaping the world and advocates for positive change through personal responsibility.
The EP concludes with "Yours Eternally," featuring Ed Sheeran and Taras Topolia, inspired by the band's visit to Ukraine after the Russian invasion. The song began as a letter to Topolia and showcases the band's commitment to addressing global issues through their music.
Produced by Jackknife Lee, the EP reflects U2's dedication to using their platform to raise awareness and spark conversations about pressing social and political issues. The band's decision to release the EP now aligns with their history of taking a stand on important matters and using their music to advocate for change.
