The pardons were announced by White House pardon czar Alice Marie Johnson. The ex-NFL players who received clemency are Joe Klecko, Nate Newton, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, and the late Billy Cannon.
Johnson expressed gratitude to Trump for his commitment to second chances and highlighted the qualities of grit, grace, and courage that football embodies. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones personally informed Newton, who had won three Super Bowls with the team, about the pardon. The reasons behind Trump's decision to pardon these players were not disclosed by the White House.
Klecko, a former New York Jets star, pleaded guilty to perjury related to an insurance fraud investigation. Newton, an offensive lineman, admitted to a federal drug trafficking charge. Lewis, who played for the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns, was involved in a drug case shortly after being drafted in 2000. Henry, a running back for the Denver Broncos, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic cocaine. Cannon, who played for multiple teams, confessed to counterfeiting in the 1980s due to financial struggles.
Each of these players had notable careers in the NFL, with accolades such as All-Pro selections and Pro Bowl appearances. Cannon, in addition to his NFL achievements, won the Heisman Trophy while playing for Louisiana State University. He passed away in 2018.
