16-Year Fugitive Caught at Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics: The Unlucky Arrest of a Slovakian Thief

A Slovakian fugitive who had evaded capture for 16 years was apprehended in Milan while attending the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics to support his national ice hockey team. The 44-year-old man, who remains unnamed, was sought by Italian authorities for a string of thefts committed in 2010. The carabinieri successfully located and arrested the fugitive after he registered at a campsite on the outskirts of Milan, triggered by an automatic alert from the campsite reception. Following his arrest, the man was transferred to Milan's San Vittore prison to serve an 11-month-and-7-day sentence.

The fugitive's timing was unfortunate as he missed the opening game where Slovakia's hockey team triumphed over Finland with a convincing 4-1 victory at Milan's Santagiulia Arena.
