Rescued Manatee: A Tale of Collaboration and Conservation Efforts

A young manatee found itself trapped in a storm drain in Melbourne Beach and was rescued by a team of specialists from SeaWorld Orlando, Brevard County Fire Rescue, and the University of Florida’s Veterinary Emergency Treatment Services. The manatee, believed to have sought shelter from cold waters, was fortunate to be spotted and rescued. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of working together to help individual manatees in need.

Manatees face cold stress during wintertime when water temperatures drop, prompting them to seek warmth in freshwater springs or power plant discharge areas. Unfortunately, cold stress can be fatal, as seen in previous years when manatee deaths due to cold stress increased. This year, several manatees have already succumbed to cold stress, emphasizing the ongoing threat to these gentle creatures.

SeaWorld’s rescue teams are actively responding to cases of cold-stressed manatees, including the recent rescue of a manatee from a storm drain in Melbourne Beach. Despite being on the thinner side, the rescued manatee has shown signs of improvement since arriving at SeaWorld. He has started eating and is becoming more active, indicating a positive trajectory in his recovery process.

The rescued manatee is currently undergoing rehabilitation at SeaWorld with the goal of eventually releasing him back into the wild. It will take time for him to readjust to swimming freely after being stuck in the storm drain. The team is cautiously optimistic about his recovery and is dedicated to providing the care needed for his successful return to his natural habitat.

As part of the ongoing efforts to protect manatees, the public is encouraged to report any manatees in distress to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Wildlife Alert Hotline. By staying vigilant and proactive, individuals can contribute to the well-being of manatees and help ensure their conservation.
