Following in Their Footsteps: Maxim Naumov's Journey to Honor His Figure Skating Legacy

Maxim Naumov, a talented figure skater, is following in the footsteps of his late parents, Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova, who were medal-winning figure skaters representing Russia in the 1992 and 1994 Olympics. Tragically, Vadim and Evgenia passed away in a plane crash in 2025. Now, Maxim is fulfilling their dreams by competing for the U.S. at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympic Games, a goal he has cherished since childhood.

Evgenia and Vadim, both born in St. Petersburg, Russia, formed a professional pairs career in 1985, known for their classical style and artistic expression. While they did not win Olympic medals, they had a successful career, earning multiple medals at the World Figure Skating Championship and the ISU Grand Prix Final. The pair, who were also married, immigrated to the U.S. in 1998 and became coaches at the Skating Club of Boston.

Maxim, their only child, started skating at a young age under his parents' guidance. After their tragic passing, Maxim has honored their memory by dedicating his performances to them. He feels their presence on the ice, finding comfort and motivation in their memory. Maxim's dedication and emotional connection to his routines have been evident in his performances, where he pays tribute to his parents' legacy and the love they shared for figure skating.

Competing at the U.S. Championships a year after his parents' deaths, Maxim continues to carry on their legacy with resilience and determination. His family's mantra, "We have to fight," serves as a reminder of the strength and perseverance instilled in him by his parents. Maxim's emotional performances and dedication to his craft reflect the deep bond he shares with his late parents, who continue to inspire and guide him on his skating journey.
