WWII Navy Veteran John 'Johnny Q' Quinesso Sr. Celebrates 100th Birthday Aboard Battleship New Jersey

Celebrating his 100th birthday aboard the Battleship New Jersey, World War II Navy veteran John “Johnny Q” Quinesso Sr. was honored with a special luncheon and recognition ceremony. A lifelong South Jersey resident, Quinesso served in the South Pacific during WWII and has volunteered at the Battleship New Jersey Museum for over 20 years, sharing his experiences with visitors from around the world. He considers the battleship his second home and values the opportunity to educate others about the cost of freedom.
Joining the Navy at 19, Quinesso served as a radio operator on the LSM-302, delivering troops and supplies to beaches across the Pacific. His most memorable moment was receiving the message of Japan's surrender off the coast of Guam, signaling the end of the war. After a 43-year career as an IRS agent, Quinesso found a new calling at the Battleship New Jersey Museum, where he continues to educate future generations about sacrifice and service.
Marshall Spevak, CEO of the museum, emphasized the importance of preserving the stories of WWII veterans like Quinesso as time passes. Quinesso, known for his sharp wit and warm demeanor, credits his service for shaping him into a mature young man. At the ceremony, he was awarded New Jersey’s Distinguished Service Medal, but his greatest reward remains connecting with people and sharing his stories on the ship he holds dear.
