Tragic Crash in St. James: Matthew Smith Pleads Not Guilty to DUI Charges Resulting in Officer's Death

A young man from Hauppauge, Matthew Smith, pleaded not guilty to charges of driving drunk in a crash that resulted in the death of Nassau Police Officer Patricia Espinosa. The incident occurred in St. James, and Smith was arraigned in Suffolk County with a bail set at $1 million. Smith was brought to court in a wheelchair due to a leg injury sustained in the crash.
Prosecutors allege that Smith was intoxicated when he ran a red light and collided with Espinosa's vehicle, resulting in her death. Smith and his friend, John Andali, had been drinking and speeding between locations in Suffolk County leading up to the crash. Surveillance footage showed Smith drinking at a pub earlier in the night, and the tracking system in his truck indicated high speeds before the collision.
Toxicology testing revealed that Smith had a blood alcohol concentration of .20 percent at the time of the crash, and he was underage at the time. Espinosa's death has deeply impacted the law enforcement community, with Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney expressing condolences and emphasizing the pursuit of justice in the case.
Smith's attorney stated that they would approach the legal process with respect and sensitivity, acknowledging the tragedy that has affected both families involved. Espinosa's funeral services were held in Smithtown, with a significant law enforcement presence to honor her memory. She is survived by her husband, a fellow police officer, their daughter, and extended family members.
