Key Figure in Benghazi Attack Apprehended: Zubayr Al-Bakoush Faces U.S. Justice

The United States has apprehended Zubayr Al-Bakoush, who is believed to be a key figure in the 2012 assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro made the announcement of the arrest, with Bondi stating that Al-Bakoush faces charges of murder, terrorism, and arson related to the attack.

Bondi emphasized that Al-Bakoush will be subject to American justice on U.S. soil and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Patel confirmed that the arrest of Al-Bakoush took place overseas, without disclosing the specific location of the apprehension.

Expressing gratitude to the CIA and other law enforcement partners, Patel underscored the commitment to pursuing individuals involved in acts of terrorism against American citizens. He credited President Donald Trump for providing law enforcement with the necessary resources to combat terrorism globally.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who will handle the prosecution, revealed that Al-Bakoush was initially charged in 2015 under seal for 11 years. The unsealed indictment accuses Al-Bakoush of the murders of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, State Department employee Sean Smith, and CIA contractors Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, as well as the attempted murder of State Department Special Agent Scott Wickland.

The Benghazi attack on September 11, 2012, resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including Ambassador Stevens, Smith, Doherty, and Woods. The assailants, armed with rifles and grenades, launched a violent assault on the U.S. Special Mission in Benghazi, causing casualties and destruction.
