Former Dodgers Outfielder Yasiel Puig Found Guilty in Illegal Sports Betting Trial

Former Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was found guilty in a federal court trial related to his alleged involvement in an illegal sports betting operation. Puig, who played for the Dodgers for six seasons, faced charges of obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal investigators. The sentencing is set for May 26.
The charges against Puig stemmed from a 2017 investigation into an illegal gambling business run by ex-minor league pitcher Wayne Nix. Puig was accused of starting to place illegal bets in May 2019 and owed the gambling operation $282,000 for sports gambling losses by June 2019. He placed 899 additional bets on various sports from July to September 2019.
During an interview with investigators in January 2022, Puig allegedly lied multiple times about his knowledge of the gambling business and its participants. Despite reaching a plea deal in August 2022, Puig backed out of the agreement, leading to the current charges against him. If convicted on all charges, Puig could face a sentence of 10 years or more in prison.
Puig's legal team, Waymaker LLP, stated that Puig is eager to present his side of the story in court. Meanwhile, Nix, the mastermind behind the illegal gambling operation, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and filing a false tax return.
