Zayn, the former member of One Direction, has announced the release of his fifth studio album, Konnakol, set to be released on April 17 through Mercury Records/Island Records U.K. The lead single, "Die for Me," will be available this Friday. This album follows his 2024 release, Room Under the Stairs, which achieved success on the Billboard 200 and the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart. The title of the album, Konnakol, refers to the vocal art of creating percussion syllables, particularly seen in South Indian Carnatic music. Zayn expressed that this album is a reflection of his heritage and personal growth, drawing inspiration from his roots and identity.
Zayn's upcoming album showcases his evolution as an artist, with the artwork featuring a fusion of his face with that of a snow leopard, a visual that was initially teased during his Las Vegas residency at Park MGM. Since his debut solo album, Mind of Mine, in 2016, which reached No. 1 in the U.S. and U.K., Zayn has continued to release music with albums like Icarus Falls (2018) and Nobody Is Listening (2021). He also embarked on his first solo tour in 2024, performing in the U.K. and North America.
The announcement of Zayn's new album follows the recent music releases from his former One Direction bandmates, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. Styles is gearing up to release his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, on March 6, while Tomlinson recently achieved success with his album How Did I Get Here? Zayn's playful comment about ticket prices at his residency show sparked speculation about a possible nod to Styles' upcoming tour.
