A recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll revealed that a majority of Americans believe that President Donald Trump is performing worse than former President Joe Biden. The poll showed that 51% of Americans think Trump is doing a worse job compared to Biden, while 49% believe Trump is doing better. The survey also highlighted that a significant number of Republicans (87%) feel that Trump is outperforming Biden, while the majority of Democrats (85%) think Trump is doing worse. Among independents, 56% stated that Trump is doing worse, while 44% said he is doing better.

In terms of overall approval ratings, Trump's approval rating in the survey of 2,000 registered voters dropped to 45%, with 51% disapproving and 4% undecided. This marks a decrease from his 47% approval rating in December. The approval ratings are divided along party lines, with 84% of Republicans approving, 84% of Democrats disapproving, and 57% of independents disapproving.

The survey also assessed Trump's performance on various issues. Trump received the highest approval rating for his response to anti-ICE protests, with 51% expressing approval. However, his lowest approval ratings were on handling inflation (39%) and tariffs and trade policy (39%). When asked about the most pressing issues facing the country, respondents identified affordability, immigration, and the economy as top concerns. Only 38% of respondents believe the country is on the right track, while 52% think it's on the wrong track.

Regarding immigration enforcement, 52% of respondents approve of how the Trump administration is enforcing immigration laws at the U.S. border, but only 44% approve of current immigration enforcement within U.S. cities. Specifically, in Minneapolis, 58% of respondents believe that Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents have used excessive force, and 57% think these agents have gone too far in enforcing immigration laws.

In terms of party preferences for the upcoming congressional midterm elections, Democrats hold a slight advantage over Republicans among likely voters, with a 52% to 48% lead. The poll was conducted on Jan. 28-29 and has a margin of error of 1.99 percentage points.
