Intraparty Tensions Escalate: Allred Criticizes Talarico in U.S. Senate Primary

Former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred criticized state Rep. James Talarico in a video for allegedly making derogatory remarks about him and urged voters to support U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. The allegations stemmed from a viral video posted by a TikTok content creator, @morga_tt, who claimed that Talarico referred to Allred as a "mediocre Black man" and Crockett as a "formidable, intelligent Black woman." Talarico's campaign did not immediately respond to the allegations, and the content creator, Morgan, did not provide a comment.
Ali Zaidi, a former Texas House staffer for Talarico, defended Talarico, calling the allegations out of character for him. Allred's video criticizing Talarico has intensified the intraparty tensions in the competitive primary race. Allred accused Talarico of using praise for Black women to mask criticism of Black men and questioned Talarico's motives for allegedly calling him "mediocre." Allred also criticized Talarico's emphasis on his Christian faith in his campaign.
Allred's video ended with a message to young Black men aspiring to be community leaders, advising them to confront haters like Talarico. Allred, who was the 2024 Democratic nominee against Sen. Ted Cruz, is now running for his former congressional seat and facing a tough primary against U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson, who has endorsed Talarico. The TikTok creator, Morgan, initially planned to support Talarico over Allred until Crockett entered the race.
Morgan recounted a conversation with Talarico where she raised concerns about his campaign's messaging and its impact on Black communities. Talarico reportedly responded by emphasizing his commitment to Black constituents and the importance of engaging with Black voters. The conversation then shifted to last year's efforts by prominent Texas Democrats to organize a statewide slate of candidates, where Talarico allegedly made the controversial remarks about Allred.
In response to the allegations, Allred endorsed Crockett and urged voters to support her in the primary. Recent polling showed Crockett and Talarico in a close race, with Crockett garnering significant support from Black Democratic voters. Talarico's support has been primarily from white and Latino voters, with limited backing from Black voters. Crockett's campaign declined to comment on the situation, and the primary race continues to be fiercely contested.
