The Sunday Times Tax List: Revealing the UK's Top 100 Taxpayers and Their Contributions

The UK's 100 biggest taxpayers were revealed in the annual Sunday Times Tax List, with notable names like JK Rowling, Mo Salah, and Harry Styles making the cut. Topping the rankings were the billionaire brothers behind Betfred, Fred and Peter Done, who contributed an estimated £400.1 million in taxes over the past year. The top 100 taxpayers collectively paid £5.758 billion in taxes, reflecting an increase from the previous year. Changes in tax rates implemented by the Labour Government influenced many taxpayers' contributions, including the Done brothers.

The list showcased a diverse range of individuals, from Premier League footballers to pop stars, business owners, and entrepreneurs. Notable entries included financial trading entrepreneur Alex Gerko and hedge fund boss Chris Rokos, who ranked high in tax payments. Newcomers to the list, such as Harry Styles and footballers Erling Haaland and Mo Salah, also made significant tax contributions. Well-known figures like JK Rowling and Ed Sheeran were also featured on the list, highlighting their substantial tax payments.

Despite some individuals leaving the UK in the past year, six taxpayers who relocated still made the list. This trend of wealthy individuals moving to other countries to avoid higher taxes or changes in tax regulations was noted by the list compiler, Robert Watts. The impact of these individuals moving offshore on tax revenue for HM Treasury was highlighted, with the potential for increased tax revenue if they had remained in the UK. The Tax List serves as a reflection of the diverse tax contributions made by individuals across various sectors in the UK.
